Class Size: 8 Students Per Teacher
Most schools put 20-30 students in a classroom with one teacher. The math makes everything else harder.
With 30 students, a teacher who wants to give individual feedback on an essay has maybe two minutes per student. A teacher who notices a student is struggling has to make a split-second decision: stop the whole class, or keep moving and hope to circle back later. A teacher who wants to let a student go deep on a topic they’re passionate about has to weigh that against keeping everyone else on track.
At Tradewinds, our ratio is 8:1. Eight students per teacher.
That changes what’s possible at a fundamental level.
A teacher with 8 students can know each one deeply—not just academically, but how they think, what motivates them, what frustrates them, where they’re ready to be challenged. They can adjust in real time, not after grading a stack of papers over the weekend.
For gifted students, this matters even more. These kids are asynchronous—they might be doing math three grade levels ahead while processing emotions at their actual age. They need adults who can see the whole child, not just the academic performance. That takes time and attention that a 1:25 ratio simply doesn’t allow.
Small class size also changes the social dynamic. With 8 kids, nobody hides. Nobody coasts. Every student is known. The quiet kid who would disappear in a class of 30 has a voice. The intense kid who would get labeled “too much” has space to be themselves.
We pair this with mixed-age groupings: K-1, grades 2-3, grades 4-5. Students learn alongside intellectual peers, not just age-mates. A first-grader reading at a third-grade level works with other students who are ready for that challenge.
Smaller classes cost more per student. We know that. We made this choice deliberately because the kind of education we’re building requires it.
