We Hired Two Remarkable Teachers

Our team is coming together, and the people joining are extraordinary.

We received over 100 applications as part of our nationwide teacher search. Carl has hired dozens of teachers in his career and has a keen eye for talent. The teachers we've hired are the best of the best.

Amber Spahn

Amber has a Master's in Literacy Education and years of experience teaching grades 2-4, including math extension for gifted and talented kids. She's coached other teachers on blended learning and technology integration. She is relocating from Maryland to join the Tradewinds team but has already spent multiple summers leading wilderness trips and community service projects in Hawaii. She brings real experience with gifted learners and a deep toolkit for differentiated instruction.

Julia Hunckler

Julia is a marine microbiologist completing her Master's in Marine Science at Hawaii Pacific University. She discovered a new microbial species from deep-sea hydrothermal vents, presented at NASA's Astrobiology Conference, and joined an NSF-funded research expedition aboard an oceanographic vessel with a deep-sea ROV. She was an Intel International Science and Engineering Fair finalist in high school. Julia has taught everything from preschool to college-level microbiology at Chaminade University, and she uses AI and computational tools daily in her research. She brings real scientific practice into the classroom.

Every Tradewinds student will get to spend parts of their day with both Amber and Julia. We're capping enrollment at 16 students next year to ensure an 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio. It's going to be an exceptional experience for every family.
